I-471 (Big Mac) Bridge Fire Emergency Repair Project
Speakers: Mike Malloy and Jim O'Leary, E.L. Robinson
Program: Early the morning of November 1, ODOT got a call no one ever wants to get – Your bridge is on fire. A massive fire forced the closure of the I-471 southbound bridge over the Ohio River in Cincinnati, which carries approximately 85,000 vehicles a day. The repair project team was able to get this vital structure back open in 100 days.
This presentation will discuss how the team was able to assess the damage, stabilize the bridge, design replacements, prepare plans, fabricate, and perform the reconstruction under tight deadlines and difficult weather conditions. E.L. Robinson served as the lead designer on the project and the presentation will include a focus on the structural design for the repairs.
